PROPER 28-Epistle
TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
TITLE: Surprise!

The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.” 1Thessalonians 5:2

“Surprise!” True surprises can be either good or bad. For example, a surprise birthday party can be nice. Then again, the surprise that comes when a loved one unexpectedly passes away can be heart-wrenching. The surprise mentioned in our text is ‘the Day of the Lord’ or, His second coming. For those who never believed in Jesus in the first place, then to see He really did and does exist-surprise! That day and time no one knows, not even the ‘earthly‘ Son. Hence, it is a time least expected by all mankind…surprise! ‘

Another thing about surprises, if they are known they are no longer surprises. We who are alive at that great day will be caught up to meet our Lord in the air; no surprise! We who believed Jesus words, “I am the Way, Truth and Life and no man comes unto The Father except by Me.” will be separated to the right; no surprise! However, for those who thought, “There are all kinds of ways to heaven besides Jesus” and “I never did anything seriously bad. I’m a basically a good person;” they will be separated to the left-surprise!
Though we shouldn’t be by now yet, when we consider and witness God’s amazing grace
its still; “Surprise!” Again, and again, and again!

Father, we thank you for Your blessed daily surprises and look forward to Your surprises awaiting us in heaven, in Jesus Name, Amen.

PROPER 28-Gospel
TEXT: Matthew 25:14-30
TITLE: Give an Account

After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.”
                                                                                                                         Matt.25:19

The Bible says, “Each of you will give an account.” Three servants in the text were to give their master an account of that which they were given to manage (in this case-money). Two servant’s accounts were good, one servant’s was bad. Imagine what some of our accounts might be that day we’re called to give an account…
“Lord, I thought all those things were mine and I could do as I pleased with them.”
“Lord, you know I really did have tough Mondays through Saturdays, and Sunday was my day to sleep in.”
“Lord, I’m speechless! I spent my entire life convincing myself you didn’t exist.”
“Lord, is it too late to say I’m sorry for wasting all the gifts and talents You gave me?”

I believe there will also be some who say something to this effect:
“Lord, you blessed me richly with spiritual and temporal blessings. I taught my family about You, worked at my job and provided for their spiritual and temporal needs. I do know I couldn’t have done even what I did without Your Spirit’s help. Yet, I know I’ve also mismanaged many things; I deserve death. I’ve no excuse. I look to Your forgiveness through Jesus.”

By God’s grace and promise, we can believe He will say something to the affect-“Well done good and faithful servant. Come and share Your Master’s happiness.”

Dear Heavenly Father, help me be a faithful steward of all the gifts and talents You’ve given me, in Jesus Name, Amen.

PROPER 28-Old Testament
TEXT: Zephaniah 1:7-16
TITLE: The Predicted Day of the Lord

At that time I will search Jerusalem…and punish those who are complacent…who think, ’The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.” Zephaniah.1:12

Weather is known to be unpredictable. Therefore, people go to great lengths to prepare for it. They take along an umbrella for possible rain or an extra sweater for possible cold, or sun screen if they think it will be a sunny day. If people prepare themselves for something as unpredictable as weather, why don’t they prepare for something that calls for preparation and is predictable-the return of our Lord? Some do; His believers! Yet some choose to remain complacent even in the face of what’s certain to come.

Our text is full of predicted imagery as to what that day is going to be like; bitter cries, shouting, it will be a day of writhing, wrath, and ruin; such as the world has never known. Such a warning instills fear and fear can sometimes be good. The Bible says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” However, there are those who think, “There’s no God!” or “The Lord will do nothing.” For the believers the Psalmist says, “It will not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. (KJV) The reward for complacency and unpreparedness! However, we His children, not motivated by ‘fear-fear,‘ but Godly fear and by His love and we believe it is by His grace we are saved. Thus, ours will be a reward of peace and eternal joy!

Father, keep me ever prepared for Your second coming, in Jesus Name, Amen.

PROPER 27-Epistle
TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
TITLE: Ignorance: Far From Bliss

“Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who have fallen asleep”
                                                                                                     1 Thessalonians 4:13

I once heard this comparison between ignorant and stupid: “A person can be ignorant (not knowing some fact or idea) without being stupid (incapable of learning because of a basic mental deficiency).” When Paul says he would not want his brothers to be ‘ignorant’ about those who have fallen asleep, he’s really saying he wants them to be aware of the facts when it comes to death. That is, that those who died in faith in Christ will be resurrected from their death.

Case in point: I recall doing Bible studies at a group home in my hometown and Erwin, one of the residents with a mental disorder would always say to me, “My mother’s up there!” and point to heaven. “I’m going to see my mother someday,” he’d always add with joy and conviction. In no way would I call Erwin neither ignorant nor stupid because he knew! He knew ‘the facts that God is going to raise the dead. This blessed hope gives peace and assurance to believers close to death as well as every believer. It also serves as a reminder that those we love who die in faith, we will see again. Thus, Erwin’s joy is our joy!

Lord, we pray for those who are ‘ignorant’ of Your Gospel that they come to believe in You and Your Word, Amen..

PROPER 27-Gospel
TEXT: Matthew 25:1-13
TITLE: It’s Coming and So Is He

Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” Matt.25:13

Every time I go see my Chiropractor Dr. L, I know its coming! I know she’s going to make that quick crank of my neck. I can’t help anticipate its coming either! That’s not good, according to Dr. L. She would have me remain relaxed so my muscles aren’t tense or that I fight against her adjustment. She’d remind me, “Now relax! Don’t think about what you think is coming. Instead, think about…” and she’d give me some other thought to think about. Then before I knew it, “Bang!” and crackity, crack, crack!

Getting an adjustment is good but anticipating the moment it will occur is bad. However, anticipating and watching for our Lord’s return is good! The 5 virgins that filled their
lamps with oil were prepared to meet the Bridegroom. Jesus would have us be prepared by being in His Word, receiving His Sacraments, being in prayer, and being ever mindful of the petition in His prayer He gave us: “Thy kingdom come.” The day is coming! We
look forward to with great anticipation to the day Jesus will return and takes us to the Wedding feast. This wedding feast; the union of Jesus-the Bridegroom, and we, the Bride-His Church is eternal. His Word even now serves as a precious reminder to keep us ever ready!

Father, help me be ever vigilant in my watch for You, in Jesus Name, Amen.

PROPER 27-Old Testament
TEXT: Amos 5:18-24
TITLE: Pure Piety

I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies” Amos 5:21

According to Chinese tradition, filial piety was the duty of all Chinese. Being a filial son meant complete obedience to his parents during their lifetime. As his parents grew older, the son was then responsible for taking the best possible care of them. In our text, God was upset with His children, the Children of Israel. Their piety and pious acts were worthless and a stench to God. They did not do them with justice and righteousness or a believing heart. One could say they were like unbelieving church-goers; hence, they were only there taking up a pew. Unbelievers cannot in any way please God.

In a sense, we’re all filial pious children to our Heavenly Father to whom we must obey
with perfect obedience. There is only One who can and has been perfectly obedient; His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus has paid the price of our disobedience on the cross. Now when God sees those who believe in Jesus, He sees His righteous and perfect children. Also as a result, our every act done in faith is pleasing in His sight. The Bible and God says,
“Because you are luke-warm, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Half-hearted, ‘going through the motions’ of being a Christian does not cut it with God. Our hope, holiness, and acceptance of The Father rest on Jesus; our never failing stream of righteousness.

Lord, continue to nurture our faith that all our acts may be pious and pure in Your sight, in Jesus Name, Amen.
